Pitch Settings

Setting Pitch on the GSC Propeller

Determine the pitch you will be using (see Suggested Starting Pitch charts) to get a pitch which should be close to what you will be using.

Step 1. Zero the protractor by placing base of clear triangle flat against the propeller hub. Rotate white numbered triangle until pendulum indicates zero. Make sure pendulum swivels freely.

Step 2. Rotate prop till first blade is horizontal. Slide cut-out portion of clear triangle over end of the prop blade.

Step 3. Slide the protractor to the farthest position until the tool is tight on the blade. Twist the blade carefully until the pendulum indicates the desired pitch.

Step 4. Repeat on all blades, then snug the hub bolts carefully and recheck the pitch as you tighten the bolts to make sure the pitch remains unchanged.

Check the zero as in Step 1 periodically to make sure protractor has not moved.

Try to achieve pitch of max. ½ degree difference blade to blade. When all is O.K. use an inch pound torque wrench in a cross pattern and torque all bolts to a maximum 100 in/lbs. only.

Checking Tracking on GSC Propeller

It is easiest to check tracking while Propeller is installed on aircraft.

Step 1. Place a stationary object, such as a wood block, as close to tip of blade as possible, to be used as a reference point. This will be used to mark the tracking.

Step 2. Align pencil on flat side of blade, and holding prop blade stationary, make marks for both leading edge and trailing edge of blade.

Step 3. Rotate each blade around to same point and repeat for each blade.

Step 4. Measure distance between marks. A tolerance of 1/8" is acceptable. If you are over 1/8", you could experience vibration. See GSC installation instructions for corrective measures.

SUGGESTED PITCH SETTING FOR GSC PROPS

Please note that pitch settings are approximate and can vary with engine, altitude and atmospheric conditions. We recommend doing a static ground test once initial pitch has been set and achieving as close to manufacturer’s recommended engine RPM on tachometer as possible. (see Step 11)
